My Story

Hi, I’m Ursula a crafter and designer who created Auntie Kitty’s Button Box in 2013.  An Interior Designer by trade, with a strong do it yourself attitude I found myself having to do just that when we were plunged into recession in 2008. I floundered for a while not knowing what to do and as I lived in a rather remote part of Ireland, Co.Leitrim, there were not many opportunities either. I decided that I would just have to develop my own opportunities and create a job for myself.  I began by making Tote Bags from the discarded Interior design samples, just so they didn’t have to end up in landfill, and with the hope that people would like them and what they stood for. I believe that beautiful fabric should never end up in landfill.

I had also been a quilter all my life and as a teenager made ragdolls, I grew up in the Holly Hobby era, so fabric dolls were a real thing back then.  On top of that I came from a family of sewers my mother and Aunts would spend their evenings making a whole range of wonderful crafty things to sell at charity ‘Sales of Work’ which we now call ‘Craft Fairs’, some of their Christmas decorations I still have to this day.

When I eventually decided to start this as a business in 2013, I used to put buttons on everything I had made and somebody asked me where I got all the buttons from. My response was “from auntie Kitty’s button box” an old chocolate box that I inherited from her sewing room filled with buttons and memories.  And the rest as they say is history.  Speaking of history having started out on this journey into the world of sewing and crafting I learned that not only were my mother and aunts sewers but that my maternal grandmother, grand aunts and great grandmother were all seamstresses, some of whom worked for Limerick Lace, so it seems the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

My love for sewing has been handed down to me and I believe that my work is filled with the love of generations. My passion for sewing just grows stronger with time and if my ancestors are anything to go by I will still be sewing well into my old age.

I hope you enjoy your visit to my website and that you find something that helps you share the passion and joy that has created these unique products.

Go raibh míle maith agat ( Many thanks)

Ursula
